Waste Management Policy & Goals

In 2019, For Beervana’s 18th Birthday, we enacted the festival’s first Waste Reduction Policy with the goal of reducing the impact Beervana has on our natural environment. We made some big strides in 2019 and 2020 with a 50% increase in recycling, a 100% increase in Composting and a decrease in leftover pallets (sent for wood chipping).

In 2021, seeing that we had gone as far as we could on our own steam, we employed the Wellington Waste Managers (now Nonstop Solutions) to work alongside us and Sky Stadium on our waste minimisation plan.

This resulted in a huge increase, YOY,  in our diversion of waste from landfills with 25.2% to landfills by volume (down from 68% in 2020).

We continue to have an aspirational goal of “zero waste to landfill”. We strive to operate in an environmentally sustainable way and to be accountable for our impact and we believe that with your help we can reach this lofty goal.

We encourage all of our partners and attendees to consider their own environmental impacts and have outlined the initiatives and policies we will be implemented since 2019 to continue our commitment to sustainability.

Composting
Composting systems were a big success in 2020, with bins around the concourse for composting, recycling and general waste. We will be more strongly enforcing a ‘compostable (in Wellington)  packaging only’ rule which will greatly reduce the levels of waste sent to landfills. This does require stricter monitoring as the composting must not be contaminated with other types of waste.

Waste & Recycling
For your rubbish, compost and recycling in 2021, we ask that you please dispose of it in the correct bag/bin provided to you and before each session begins. This year we ask that you leave your sorted rubbish at your stall, not out on the concourse.. It is crucial that waste is sorted into correct streams, as contaminated compost waste will not be accepted by collectors. Stadium cleaners we collect and sort.

A significant amount of landfill waste in past years has been attributed to plastic pallet wrap. Please consider the volume of plastic waste you are creating when wrapping pallets and keep these soft plastics separate from other waste as they can be recycled only if kept separate.
