Achtung! Introducing the 2024 Beervana International Invitational
2024 sees the return of the Beervana International Invitational for the first time in five years! When it comes to good beer, it’s hard to look past Germany, so this year we’ll be celebrating the breadth, history and creativity of German brewing (not an easy task with three breweries!). We’ll be welcoming brewers from each of the three breweries to pour their beer to the Good Beer drinking people of New Zealand. Here’s what you can expect from the German breweries joining us in Wellington this August. The Beervana International Invitational is supported by our mates at Singapore Airlines and DACHSER.
Schneider Weisse
Founded: 1872
Location: Kelheim, Bavaria
When it comes to history, the Schneider Weisse Brewery has it in spades. They’ve been owned by the same family for more than 150 years, with their founder Georg I. Schneider the first commoner to get a license to brew wheat beer. They started brewing in Munich that year, with production moving to Kelheim following World War II.
They’re known for top-fermented wheat beer (which is exactly what it sounds like) and have been brewing their TAP 7 Original from the same recipe since 1872 and it’s now enjoyed in more than 40 countries. Their range includes 10 wheat beers and in 2021 they also added “Schneider’s Helles”,a traditional German pale lager, to their line up. Brewmaster Elena Fersch will be joining us at Beervana.
Schneeeule Brauerei
Founded: 2016
Location: Berlin
On the other end of the historical spectrum is Schneeeule, but while they’ve only been brewing for eight years, their Berliner Weisse beer is steeped in history. Civil engineer-turned-brewer Ulrike Genz discovered the style when she was studying brewing technology.
She’s now on a mission to bring it back and give Berlin back a piece of its culture and history through Berliner Weisse. The sour wheat beer has been around since the 16th Century and was the most popular alcoholic drink in Berlin by the late 19th Century. With only a handful of breweries still producing it, Beervana is an amazing opportunity to try this misunderstood beer.
We’re so excited to have Ulrike joining us at Beervana to serve her beer and share her love of Berliner Weisse!
Sudden Death Brewing Co.
Founded: 2017
Location: Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein
From the Northern reaches of Germany comes a brewery created over a mutual love of ice hockey and beer. Founders Olli and Ricky (re-)discovered their passion for beer on trips to the United States to watch their beloved Boston Bruins and thus, Sudden Death was born. Olli will be making the trek from Lübeck to share their modern style craft brews with New Zealand beer-lovers!
