Everything you need to know to become the National Champ!

Qualifying rounds for singles and doubles will run through Beervana sessions 1, 2 and 3, and the finals will take place during session 4 on Saturday night.

All you need to do is turn up to the Cello Cornhole grandstand at Beervana, register, pay a $10 entry fee and step up to the line to play the next contestant. You can play singles or as a double.

If you win the first game, you’ll go on to play another player with a winning game under their belt. Win a third time in a row… and you’re off to the finals, baby!

Finalists will get a free ticket to the Saturday night session of Beervana.

You can stick around and play all your games back to back, or you can play one, go off to enjoy a bit of Beervana, and come back later to play your next games. We’ll have three cornhole courts running at a time, as well as a practice court.

How to play cornhole

Cornhole is played with a board that has a round hole in it, and four ‘bags’ per player. The object of the game is to throw your bags from a distance of around 6 metres, aiming to get it into the hole.

Players alternate at pitching their bags, until all four have been thrown. The score is totalled for that inning, and then the players go again. This process is repeated until a winner is declared.

Points are awarded for any bag that goes in the hole or lands on the board. Cornhole uses ‘cancellation’ scoring, which means that in each inning the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent.

  • Bag in-the-count or a Woody: Any bag which comes to rest anywhere on top of the board. Each is worth one point.
  • Bag in-the-hole  or Cornhole: Any bag which is thrown through the hole or knocked through the hole by another bag. Each is worth three points.
  • Foul bags: Refers to any bag that was designated a foul bag as the result of a rules violation. Zero points.
  • Dead bags: Refers to any bag that contacts the ground before coming to rest on the board. Zero points.

In qualifying rounds, the winner will be the first person or team to score 12 points.

The finals will use official* cornhole rules and a tournament knockout bracket system. With each win, you’ll progress to the next round and games continue until we have champions for the singles and doubles. The first person or team to score 21 points will win the game.
